A rivalry that began with something frivolous (a WBC franchise belt) concludes with the only thing that truly matters.

On Saturday (ESPN PPV, 10 p.m. EST), a younger champion still in his prime will battle an older, veteran former champion eager to prove that his prime isn’t over. It’s a story as old as boxing itself. Youth always triumphs in the end. Its winning date and location are unknown.

Vasiliy Lomachenko has previously visited this location. His second defeat, in a lightweight unification against Teofimo Lopez, saw youth triumph, but not in a way that announced Lomachenko had passed the test of time. Youth did not easy triumph. Lopez established his jab early on, stifling Lomachenko’s assault, which only gradually emerged in the second half of the bout. Lomachenko is now older, facing an opponent with a better jab, better feet, and a bitter recollection of when his mandatory chance at Lomachenko was substituted by the WBC finding a method to crown them both and earn title sanctioning fees from both. It’s unusual for a champion to pursue a challenger, but undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney has been pursuing former unified champ Vasiliy Lomachenko for four years and will finally fight him on Saturday night at the MGM Grand.

Since winning the WBC interim title and being upgraded to full champion in 2019, “The Dream” has been clamoring for a rematch with Lomachenko. Unfortunately, Lomachenko was not interested in fighting Haney and lost his WBA (Super) and WBO lightweight championships to IBF champion Teofimo Lopez in 2020.+

After defeating George Kambosos Jr., who beaten Lopez for three titles, Haney would become the undisputed champion in 2022. After reclaiming the championships from Kambosos in a rematch in October, Haney set his sights on the guy who had avoided fighting him.

When Lomachenko had to withdraw from a Kambosos battle to defend his native country of Ukraine in the war with Russia, he paved the way for Haney to become the uncontested champion. Last October, the 35-year-old returned to the ring to defeat Jamaine Ortiz, putting him in position for a battle with the American.

The future collides with the present when Haney and Lomachenko square off on ESPN pay-per-view, with the winner claiming the title of finest 135-pound fighter in the world.
